Will A New Higher-Resolution Apple Monitors Launch In 2022?

Apple's Pro Display XDR was released in 2019, and rumors of one or more new monitors ring true, with at least one said to have a 7K resolution.

Apple is rumored to be launching a higher-resolution monitor in 2022 to go along with new Mac desktop computers powered by Apple Silicon. It's rare to see the iPhone maker release new Mac displays that any type of screen update is interesting. This isn't the first rumor about a new Apple display, but this one sounds a bit different with both good and bad sides to the story.

The Pro Display XDR is the only monitor that Apple is selling currently. As impressive as it is, it was announced in 2019, and it's time for something new. With mini-LED backlighting, it features 6K resolution, a one-million-to-one contrast ratio, and up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness. When first introduced, those were great metrics and are still great three years later. But, of course, the iPad Pro 12.9 and 2021 MacBook Pro laptops have similar technology at a lower resolution and much lower price.

A recent report from 9to5Mac references unnamed sources that suggest Apple is readying a new 'Studio Display' with a resolution of 7K, so an even higher pixel count than the current Pro Display XDR. It's unknown whether this will come in a larger 36-inch size or match the 32-inch diagonal measurement of the current offering but at a greater pixel density. An odd note about this display is that it might come with an Apple A13 chip without explaining why. That could allow the monitor to double as an Apple TV or HomeKit if Apple gives it an operating system and microphone or remote. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has also mentioned that a new Apple monitor is coming in 2022. This is supposedly meant to be a lower-cost option that might not have the advanced mini-LED technology of the Pro Display XDR. Even so, a lower-cost Apple display would be a welcome addition to the lineup.

A new Apple computer monitor seems likely for 2022, with multiple sources agreeing that this is the year for an update. It's possible that Apple could release more than one new display. Its Cinema Display line had six sizes, ranging from 20-inches to 30-inches. With the resurgence of its Mac computer line, expanding the display selection makes sense. Apple might even spread the launch dates across multiple events. For example, the Worldwide Developers Conference in June would be a great time to release one geared toward developers, and the fall event might introduce the new top-of-the-line model.

What isn't clear is whether every new display will feature mini-LED backlighting. Apple could offer a lower cost option without mini-LEDs which would be nice for those on tighter budgets. Eventually, the cost of larger mini-LED panels will drop, and that technology will become available to everyone. In the meantime, an Apple Studio Display with higher resolution and standard backlighting could provide a choice for Mac mini owners or anyone looking for a second screen.
