Tool’s New ‘Opiate’ Version Is No. 1 on Hard Rock Digital Song Sales – Billboard

'Opiate²' also reaches Hot Hard Rock Songs.

Tool‘s new version of its 1992 song “Opiate²” debuts atop Billboard‘s Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart and reaches the Hot Hard Rock Songs list, both dated March 12.

“Opiate²” bows with 2,400 downloads sold in the Feb. 25-March 3 tracking week, according to MRC Data. That sales count encompasses only three days of activity for the song, as it was released March 1.

The re-recording (whose title is pronounced “opiate squared”) clocks in at nine minutes and 54 seconds, almost doubling the original’s runtime of five minutes and 20 seconds.

Tool tallies its third No. 1 on Hard Rock Digital Song Sales, which began in 2011. The band previously reigned with “Sober,” which first led in August 2019 following the arrival of the band’s catalog on streaming services and for digital download a la carte, and “Fear Inoculum,” released the same month.

“Opiate²” also starts at No. 4 on Rock Digital Song Sales.

On the multi-metric Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, “Opiate²” begins at No. 13, Tool’s top-performing title since the ranking began in June 2020. In addition to its download count, the song earned 493,000 official U.S. streams March 1-3.

“Opiate²” was released in honor of the 30th anniversary of Tool’s Opiate, the group’s debut EP released March 10, 1992. Opiate spent a week on Top Rock Albums, at No. 12, in August 2019. The band’s most recent LP, Fear Inoculum, launched atop the Billboard 200 and Top Rock Albums in September 2019.
