The $267 million San Marcos movie studio that was approved by city council in June.
The "largest and most ambitious film studio ever brought to Texas," has found its video production company. Hill Country Studios, the multi-million state-of-the-art movie studio, in San Marcos will partner with Houston-based video production company, VISION, according to a news release.
"We're thrilled to join Hill Country Studios in bringing the next generation of film and television to Texas," said VISION CEO Josh Beard in a release. "Our team is eager to establish Hill Country as a go-to LED Volume operation for major motion picture and video projects, which will drive innovation and advance talent in the field of Virtual Production."
VISION will design, install, and maintain LED-wall stage technology, named "LED Volume," in two stage spaces. The two virtual production stages will be among the largest in North America, according to the release.
LED Volumes are replacing traditional green screens for special effects. The technology was used in The Batman, HBO's Westworld, and Disney's The Mandolorian.
"From day one, we knew that Hill Country Studios was going to be one of the most cutting-edge film studios in North America and a facility that moves the industry forward," said co-founder and CEO of Hill Country Studios Cory McLoud in the release. "To build a Tier One facility, you need Tier One talent. That’s why we’ve partnered with VISION to bring world-class digital production technology to Texas and beyond."
San Marcos City Council approved the Chapter 380 Economic Development Incentive agreement with Hill Country Group LLC for the development of a $267 million, 820,000-square-foot film studio, according to a MySA report. In June, Protect the River organization protested at city hall to get the city to reconsider the tax incentive deal. City council did bring the item up at a July meeting, but after a lengthy conversation, no changes were made, according to a MySA report.
The movie studio will be on the La Cima property. It will have the two virtual production stages, 12 sound stages, infrastructure and amenities. Hill Country Studios is set to begin construction in early 2023, the release says.
