A few years ago, Apple finally implemented OLED technology – far superior to LCD technology – in the screens of its latest generation iPhone. This could change very soon. According to the latest information (via Macrumors) the firm of the bitten apple logo plans to start a sweet transition to OLED screens, using a hybrid technology of rigid and flexible OLED panels.

OLED hybrid technology is still far from perfect, but they are a very interesting alternative since they allow the creation of much thinner and much cheaper panels than flexible panels.

Using an iPad at an Apple Presentation

The original information from the Korean blog The Electric indicates that Apple wants to invest in hybrid OLED screens for its future generations of iPad. This does not necessarily imply that 2023 iPad models will hit the market with this technology, but it would be much more likely that this would happen around the year 2024.

Apparently, from Apple they do not want to rely solely on the flexible OLED technology they use in their latest iPhone models since the panels, according to the leak, they have a tendency to “wrinkle” and this effect would be much more noticeable on a larger screen like that of an iPad. Therefore, they prefer to opt for a hybrid OLED technology.

“When it became known that Apple had plans to implement hybrid OLED panels in its first iPads, the entire industry assumed that the cause was a reduction in its cost. Regardless, it is understood that there is a reason why Apple prefers hybrid OLEDs. Apple hated the fact that a part of the product’s screen could look wrinkled to the user’s eyes when using flexible OLED panels.”

The iPhone’s OLED screens are 5 to 7 inches, so in them this effect of “wrinkles” is not really appreciated. But on a large 10- to 12-inch iPad screen it would be much more visible.

Currently, the latest generation models of the Apple iPad Pro have a Liquid Retina XDR screen with IPS technology, which is a type of LCD screen, and mini-LED technology. The implementation of hybrid OLED panels would be a huge leap in terms of quality for the iPad screen and, in addition, it would also benefit the battery life.
