This all-day community event is designed to honor the lives lost and forever changed by the tragedy of the events on July 20, 2012, while also celebrating the community and strength of Aurora. It is a day of healing and sharing. At 9 a.m., the day will start with a Heroes Run 5K, organized by Zack Golditch. All proceeds will go towards an athletic scholarship for an Aurora Public Schools student. At 1:45 p.m., the formal Reflection Ceremony, organized by Becky Hogan, will begin. This will include a reading of the names of the victims, and a performance by the Aurora Singers with interpretive dancer Sister Felicia Burton. This event is apolitical and meant to honor those who were involved in the response to the shooting and the aftermath. Speakers include Aurora Police Department Interim Chief Dan Oates (and chief in 2012); former City Manager Skip Noe; U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper; Theresa Hoover mother of A.J. Boik; and Joshua Nowlan, injured survivor. At 3 p.m., the community event will begin. Wellness booths dedicated to healing trauma in various ways will include powerlifting, mental health, art and many other types of organizations. Lawn games, children's activities, the APD 5-0 gaming truck and Aurora Fire Rescue’s Big John will also be on site. A beer garden will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. with 25 local breweries led by Resolute Brewing. Wristbands will be available for purchase for unlimited tastings during the event. Over 25 chalk artists will be drawing live in the memorial garden throughout the community event, all focusing on the theme of metamorphosis. There will be a memory tent set up for community members to record their recollections of the day of the shooting or any other memories they have. At 7:20 p.m., the immersive audio/visual event Metamorphosis, designed by Renee Leon, will begin in the memorial garden. This 40-minute musical piece, performed live by Stratus Chamber Orchestra with dancers from LifeArt, will open with a spoken word piece from Aurora Poet Laureate Assetou Xango. Corresponding video will be shown on two LED screens, one in the garden and one on the great lawn. This piece moves through the horror of the night of the shooting, through the ups and downs of the past 10 years and ends with hope for a more peaceful and loving future. Registration for the 5K is available at The Hero's Journey 5K (runsignup.com) The reflection ceremony and community event is free to all.
