Which video game adaptations might work best when brought into the 'real world,' following the same formula as the Sonic franchise?
The Sonic franchise was a bit of a departure from what fans had seen in the video games when it was eventually adapted to the big screen. The titular character was taken out of the fantastical setting that audiences were familiar with and dropped into the 'real world.' That formula worked though and has already led to two successful productions.

When looking at other video game properties that could be adapted in the future, the method demonstrated by Sonic might be a viable one. Although there are of course other ways to approach these sagas that would perhaps work just as well, the concept of taking these characters into the 'real world' is definitely an intriguing one.
There has previously been an attempt to bring Mario to the big screen, but that variation of the franchise left a lot to be desired. The latest development on any kind of adaptation will be in an animated form, which might actually work best for this Nintendo hit.
While Mario started life as a classic arcade game, the series has grown to include countless other characters. How would these bizarre figures interact with the real world? That's definitely a question that fans may want to be answered, as there are certainly a lot of humorous situations that could come out of this crossover of realities.
Spyro's world is one of fantasy and mystery. The Spyro saga has become quite the classic side-scroller and there are constant rumors of new installments in development. This beloved dragon might actually be the perfect candidate for a 'real world' adaptation though.
How would humanity react to a dragon suddenly appearing? That's ultimately the question that needs answering if this clash of worlds was to take place. Of all these franchises, in many ways, this meets the Sonic formula the most, as it's easy to imagine Spyro befriending a human companion to adventure alongside.
Ratchet And Clank is enjoying quite the comeback in recent years, thanks to Insomniac's fantastic iteration of the franchise with Rift Apart. The animated movie was a great family flick but didn't live up to expectations in comparison to what it could genuinely achieve.

Ratchet and Clank's humorous partnership and unique skills would come in handy if they were to find themselves in the 'real world.' Their zany adventures, with fourth-wall-breaking gags and over-the-top visuals would clash with a realistic world in a way that might open itself up to even funnier occurrences.
Worms was always a strange concept. These battle-hardened warriors just happen to be designed in this outlandish manner. An adaptation of the property would absolutely work as an adult animated comedy, but there are other paths the series could take as well.
How silly would it be to see these worms waging war on one another in the context of a regular universe? Their battles would definitely be on a much smaller scale, but maybe a human alliance is needed to turn the tide of the conflict. It's got potential, even if it would look weird to the uninitiated.
Crash Bandicoot has so many fantastic games to draw from and the series has constantly evolved. The premise often sees him explore all kinds of jungle-based regions or mysterious castles where very few have ventured previously. That can be carried over to the 'real world' too.
His origins as a scientific experiment and his rivalry with the evil Dr. Cortex actually don't feel too dissimilar to the dynamic Sonic has with Dr. Robotnik. If it's worked once then it could absolutely work a second time. With the super-powered fox at the helm, a different reality wouldn't hinder a big-screen adaptation but instead, bring it into a more relatable setting.
If there is to ever be a proper live-action adaptation of the Zelda series then it definitely deserves to be produced in a way that honors the fantastical landscape of the games. That doesn't mean that it can't interact with the 'real world' at some stage though.

Notably, the brilliance of Link himself is his curiosity. If he was to be dropped into a reality he didn't fully understand he would quickly have to adapt. There's no doubt that he could find something mystical on Earth, based on the pre-existing legends that humanity already has.
Whether it's the Greek mythological origins of this series or the current Norse inspiration, the God Of War franchise actually plays off of the legends that humans have created. The games themselves take place in an ancient world that still plays to the notion of Gods and monsters.
If Kratos were to launch himself into the modern era though, he'd experience a very different kind of narrative. Combining the 'real world' with the myths and legends of old would perhaps be akin to something like the Thor franchise. With the stories of God Of War boosting it, there could be a popular series or movie within the concept.
Kingdom Hearts is quite literally about a clash of worlds. It sees the characters of Disney and Pixar, Final Fantasy, and The World Ends With You all come together in a range of locations from those various series. All of this could be brought to a different reality though.
A live-action movie, utilizing the likes of Sora and Mickey Mouse side by side, in a quest to free the 'real world' from the darkness overtaking it, definitely sounds like an action blockbuster waiting to happen. The visual design of the characters themselves would have to be just right to match the shift though.
Pokémon has been adapted to the big screen in a live-action format with Detective Pikachu. It was a fantastic display of how the franchise could look moving forward, but that is all set within the world the video games have created. How would it all work if the 'real world' was brought into the mix?
The idea that there could be Pokémon cascading into a reality that had never experienced them, could lead to a chaotic action piece. The anime has seen Ash have nightmares about a reality without any Pokémon at all, so to bring him into that world, to begin with, would create a compelling story. For the 'real world' perhaps some more realistic designs for these creatures would be necessary.
Conker is definitely not a title that most people would have heard of. It's one of the most bizarre video game franchises ever created, based around the titular squirrel. It's quirky and boasts brilliant scripts, even if its gameplay is sometimes a little lacking.
Regardless, for this to ever work on the big screen it has to be with this rough around the edges rodent interacting with the 'real world.' The reactions that everyday people would have to Conker would be fantastic and it's a perfect opportunity for some proper fourth-wall breaking. The notion of copying the Sonic formula itself falls straight into the property's wheelhouse.
