Rumors: Dallas Mavericks interest in Rudy Gobert overstated

The Dallas Mavericks made a surprising run to the Western Conference Finals, but their need for an upgrade at center was clear. They struggled to rebound and protect the rim in all three series with Dwight Powell starting each half before being quickly replaced by Maxi Kleber, who allows Dallas to play five out and space the floor. The Mavs must make an upgrade at the five this offseason.

That led to rumors of the team’s interest in acquiring three-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert. The current Utah center is one of the best rim protectors and screen setters in the league. Gobert and Doncic could be a fantastic pick and roll duo with the 7’1 big man locking down the paint on the other end of the floor.

Marc Stein dropped the latest on the Mavericks offseason via his Substack on Friday afternoon where he notes the team’s interest in Gobert is “somewhat overstated”, and they have no plans to go all-in to acquire the three-time All-Star.

This should come as no surprise. The Mavs had their most success this postseason playing five out and stretching the floor. They want Doncic or another playmaker attacking the paint, so they can spray out to shooters. Rudy Gobert would help them on the glass, but he clogs the paint on the offensive end of the floor.

Stein notes that the team is looking closely at Zach LaVine’s free agency as a potential target, and they are committed to finding another All-Star to pair with Luka Doncic as they chase their second championship in franchise history. Will someone become available this summer that fits that bill?

Do not expect to see the Dallas Mavericks acquire Rudy Gobert this summer, but this is far from the end of the rumors. Expect plenty more on the Mavs as the offseason chatter heats up.
